How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile in 2026
A complete sequential self-audit for finding, checking, improving and measuring a Google Business Profile.
1. Find and manage the correct profile
Sign in to the Google account that owns or manages the business. Search Google for the exact business name and city, or locate it in Google Maps. Management controls may appear directly in Search or Maps; labels and placement can vary by device and account. Confirm the name, address and photos identify the intended location before editing.
If no management controls appear, first check whether another company account manages it. Use Google's ownership or access process rather than creating a duplicate. If multiple profiles represent the same location, stop editing until you understand which one is verified and customer-facing.
2. Confirm eligibility and ownership
Confirm that the business makes in-person contact with customers during stated hours and follows Google's eligibility rules. A storefront should be staffed and able to receive customers at the listed address. A service-area business that travels to customers can hide an address that customers do not visit.
If this check fails, do not use a virtual office, mailbox or borrowed address to force eligibility. Correct the business model, address display and service area first. If verification is requested, follow the available Google method; do not keep changing core details to avoid it.
3. Audit name, location, service area and hours
The business name should match real-world branding on signs, stationery and the website. Remove added service or city keywords that are not part of the name. For a storefront, confirm the map pin, suite and customer entrance. For a service-area business, list only areas the team actually serves and hide a non-customer-facing address.
Check regular hours, holiday or special hours, and any appointment limitations. If a field is wrong, correct the authoritative source too: signage, website contact page, phone greeting or scheduling system. Consistency helps customers avoid a wasted trip even when it does not change ranking.
4. Choose categories, services and photos
Choose the primary category that best describes the main business, then use only a few additional categories for other established functions. Put specific offerings under Services or Products rather than stretching the category list. If categories are uncertain, use the category worksheet before changing them.
Add representative photos that help a customer evaluate the business: storefront and entrance, team where appropriate, equipment, environment and completed work with permission. If photos are outdated or misleading, remove or replace them. Geotagging and keyword-stuffed filenames are not established ranking requirements.
5. Test links and establish honest review requests
Open the website, appointment and other visible links on a phone. They should lead to the most useful matching page, load correctly and make calling or contacting easy. Fix redirects, broken buttons and outdated campaign links before measuring traffic.
Create one consistent review request for all eligible customers, independent of expected sentiment. Use the direct review link, neutral wording and no incentive. If the review link fails, regenerate or recopy it from the managed profile and test it signed out.
6. Record a baseline before changing more
Choose a comparison period long enough to reduce day-to-day noise, such as the previous 28 days, and record only data you can retrieve consistently. Profile calls are call clicks, not confirmed conversations. Direction requests are not confirmed visits. Website leads should come from actual calls or forms where tracking is available.
After changes, compare a similar period and note seasonality, promotions, staffing, website changes and other factors. Review what changed; do not assume one edit caused the entire difference.
